OpenAI Just Gave McKinsey an Award?

OpenAI just gave McKinsey an award for processing over 100 billion tokens on their platform.

That’s roughly 75 million pages of text.

Let that number sink in for a second. These aren’t consultants playing with ChatGPT to write better emails. They’ve embedded AI into core business operations at a scale most companies can’t even imagine.

Here’s what their research shows:

The gap is brutal:

  • 73% of organisations are using or piloting AI in at least one function
  • Only 26% have actually developed capabilities to generate tangible value at scale
  • That’s a 47-point gap between trying AI and making it work

Most companies are running “adoption theatre.” They’ve bought the tools, announced the initiatives, ticked the innovation box. But they haven’t restructured workflows, retrained teams, or rebuilt processes around what AI actually enables.

My Take

The technology isn’t the constraint anymore. Our willingness to change is.

The gap between organisations using AI and organisations transformed by AI is widening fast. The question isn’t whether AI is right for our businesses. It’s whether our businesses are ready to actually change.
