The Hidden Cost of DIY Marketing (And Wobbly Ladders)

The Hidden Cost of DIY Marketing (And Wobbly Ladders)

Over the weekend, I made the kind of decision that feels great for about five minutes… and then haunts you for days.

We’re getting the house ready for sale, and I told my wife that I’d paint the laundry and her office myself.

“No need to call in a pro,” I said with confidence. (See Dunning-Kruger effect in action.)

Now look, I got the job done. Eventually.

But not before spending way too much time going back over it, patching the bits I missed, fixing where the paint went on too thin, and generally obsessing over whether it was “good enough.”

The edges? Let’s call them mostly clean and straight.

And the ladder… I’ve been dragging that thing around for years. No idea where it came from. I’m pretty sure I’ve never bought a ladder. I’ve just sort of inherited it somewhere along the way.

It’s too short, a bit wobbly, and the worn-out feet feel as if they’re making silent threats every time I step on it.

By Monday, the job was “done,” in the same way my teenager “cleans” his room.

The DIY Marketing Trap

Just because you can do something yourself doesn’t mean it’s the best idea.

Same goes for your marketing.

Sure, you can create your own content, assemble some ads, and even construct a funnel. But is it really working? Does it feel clean, clear, and confident, or does it seem like you took a shot and wished for the best?

Because your prospects can tell. And unlike my dodgy paint job, their decision to buy (or not) depends on it.

You’re not alone in this struggle. Nearly half of small business owners handle marketing themselves, yet 49% admit they’re unsure if their efforts are actually effective.

Think about that. Half of us are doing our own marketing, and half of us don’t know if it’s working.

The Time Cost Nobody Talks About

When I was painting this weekend, I wasn’t doing anything else productive. The opportunity cost was real.

Similarly, DIY marketers spend an average of 20 hours weekly on marketing activities. That’s half a standard work week not spent on your core business.

Ask yourself: Is marketing truly your zone of genius? Or are you doing it because it seems cheaper than hiring help?

The Professional Advantage

Professional painters don’t just paint faster than I do. They paint better. They have the right tools, techniques, and experience.

The same principle applies to marketing professionals.

When implemented correctly by professionals, email marketing delivers an astounding 4,200% ROI or $42 for every $1 spent.

I don’t know about you, but I’m not getting those kinds of results from my DIY efforts.

Professional marketers aren’t just executing tactics. They’re applying tested strategies, leveraging specialised tools, and drawing from experience across multiple clients and industries.

When to Call in the Pros

So, if you’ve been DIY-ing your message, strategy, and content and aren’t getting the results you need, maybe it’s time to bring in someone who does this every day.

Not for everything, necessarily. But for the parts that truly drive revenue and growth.

After all, would you rather have a marketing strategy that looks “mostly clean and straight” or one that consistently delivers results?

My paint job will be hidden when we sell the house. Your marketing is front and center every day.

Speaking of Doing It Right

Kirk Drage and I recently hosted a webinar called “Niche to Win: Why Focused Founders Outperform the Rest.”

We had a great response; more than 100 people showed up, and we received dozens of comments, many great questions, and a few lightbulb moments too.
